Bro Chemistry: Murdoch Mysteries

I argue elsewhere that the chemistry between leads, whether romantic or platonic, creates good scenes and scripts.

Llewelyn Watts, played by Daniel Maslany, shows up in Murdoch Mysteries, Season 10. And quite abruptly, and impressively, Murdoch, as interpreted by Yannick Bisson, comes into focus.

It is possible that Bisson had tired of playing the lovestruck swain for season after season after season. He and Dr. Odgen thankfully (and finally) marry in Season 8.

Opposite Watts as the somewhat eccentric, not entirely self-aware, and brilliant (though in a different way from Murdoch) detective, Bisson becomes the ultimate straight man he was always meant to be.

The episode, "Murdoch and the Tramp," showcases this aspect of Murdoch.

What is more enchanting is the subtle back and forth between Bisson and Maslany. Murdoch will shoot Watts a skeptical look. They will exchange glances when they are getting closer to uncovering the truth. Murdoch, with the slightest air of exasperation, will hand Watts a pencil when Watts wishes to take notes. The chemistry adds another layer to many scenes and carries action forward.

Casting truly makes a difference.
