Memorable Moment: The Chivalry of Briscoe

In Law & Order, Chris Noth's character, Logan, goes through several partners, to the point where Briscoe--his last partner until Logan's return in Criminal Intent--assures him that he isn't afraid of Logan's curse, e.g. how all his partners get wiped out.

I discuss Logan's partners here: The Partners of Detective Logan.

Briscoe's arrival supplies a wonderful moment of chivalry. Logan is convinced that his prior partner, Phil Cerreta, played by Sorvino, will return after a shooting. He insists that Briscoe is only there temporarily. Briscoe shrugs and doesn't argue.

At the end of the episode, Logan finally concedes that Briscoe should put away the stuff in his boxes. Briscoe hands over Phil's nameplate with a comment that it might be awhile until Phil gets a new one in his new desk job.

Briscoe has known all along that Phil wouldn't return. Despite Briscoe's brusque, in-your-face attitude, on this issue, he let Logan came to the same conclusion in his own time.
