It seemed immature of Franzen to me.

The "High Brow"/"Low Brow" thing is ridiculous. Gene Wolfe, whose works can be incredibly complex and even Proustean, would be written of as merely a genre (SF) writer. Some rather stupid novels are consider High Brow. Take the Great Gatsby. It's basic conceit man gets dumped; becomes a bootlegger and creates a fake identity to win back his love is ridiculous. People don't do that. They just moon about for a few weeks and then they fall for someone else and the cycle begins again. Gatsby then dies in a contrived manner. It's prose is admittedly beautiful, but it doesn't hold up when you actually think about it. (You may disagree though.)Matthewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04695983348254508387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9721761.post-52103513466025915162008-02-20T22:00:00.000-05:002008-02-20T22:00:00.000-05:00"But, to an extent, you have to speak the language..."But, to an extent, you have to speak the language before you figure that out." --> i absolutely agree..Monster Paperbaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05858425341085049006noreply@blogger.com
